Saturday 6th October saw WATs Ladies 1sts play their first home game of the season taking on Uttoxeter Ladies 1st’s.
From the start Uttoxeter set about putting pressure on the WATs defence with a high attacking line, within minutes of the start they were able to break through the middle, forcing the WATs defence into some strong tackles and interceptions. Uttoxeter continued to press, creating chances and forcing WAT’s keeper Kelly into some crucial saves from both open play and penalty corners. Despite some strong defensive work by Michelle, Sophie and Claire Uttoxeter were able to force their way through, winning a crucial short corner, which they were able to put away despite the best efforts of the defensive team. With a goal advantage, Uttoxeter continued to press with confidence, however they were unable to get the ball past Kelly who continued to pull off a number of crucial saves to keep the score line 1-0 at half time.
After a much needed break, WAT’s came out and attacked Uttoxeter straight from the off. With some excellent link up play from the midfield pairing of Moorzy and Frauke, they were able to release Heidi to run at the defence, creating a number of chances. A much improved WATs finally turned the ball in to the goal after some positive work resulted in Heidi lifting the ball past the Uttoxeter keeper. Lifted by the goal, WATs continued to press, with good work by Vicky L, Jo and Vicky B creating further chances which forced the Uttoxeter keeper into some key saves. After a number of near misses and saves, Jo was able to push the ball in to the goal, giving WATs a 2-1 lead. Entering the final third of the match, Uttoxeter began to claw their way back into the game forcing Claire in to some crucial challenges, and once again Kelly performing some key saves to maintain the lead. With time running out, Uttoxeter managed to break clear, with the forward managing to tip the ball past Kelly to level the score.
On reflection, both teams will agree a 2 -2 draw was a fair result, with both teams relying on strong performances from the defence and keepers. WAT’s will be looking to return to winning ways when they take on a strong Leek team at Aldersley next Saturday.
