With a full squad and playing at home we were confident of a result but knew that Stafford would not be easy following our encounters with them last season. We started off well with some good movement of the ball, although ball pace was too slow. That being said some good pressure was put upon Stafford with an early opportunity being saved on the line by a Stafford defender. It wasn’t long afterwards that some good play lead to our first goal and a second goal followed soon after. We had a number of further opportunities but an on form Stafford keeper kept the ball out of the net on numerous occasions. We went into the second half 2-0 up but, we soon found ourselves in the same position as last week and were caught on the back foot and allowed Stafford to score 2 goals in quick succession. We seemed to lose all our shape and ended up trying to force our way through the middle which was met with a solid Stafford defence and we were soon facing a Stafford attack that resulted in us conceding a goal. With about 15 minutes to go, we found our shape and started to play some good hockey and pushed the ball out to the wings and won a number of short corners with one goal successfully coming out of our continued pressure. The last few minutes saw us make several attempts on goal with the best opportunity in the dying minute going just wide.
It was a frustrating match and one that really should have resulted in 3 points to us but, it is another point on the scoreboard and hopefully we can look to improve on this when we travel to Burton 3’s at the weekend.
