W’ton faced Buxton 1’s at home.
The first few minutes of the game saw each side playing some good hockey with little to differentiate but then W’ton settled down and played some excellent hockey that lasted the duration of the match. A high press kept the ball in the Buxton half for most of the first half and using the width and some good two touch hockey W’ton soon found themselves 1-0 up, the next 15-20 minutes saw continued pressure against Buxton with Nick Hammond firing one in the top corner, the goalie didn’t expect it, neither did W’ton and it certainly surprised Nick!! It wasn’t long before it was half time and we were 5-0 up. We know from previous matches that such a score line isn’t a guaranteed victory however, there was little to be said at half time because the team were playing ‘proper’ hockey and so long as we started the second half in the same fashion a victory should be had.
The second half started a little slower but another goal seemed to settle W’ton and the high press continued. Buxton did catch us out on a few occasions and some good keeping from Andy kept them out however, they did sneak one across the line. Later on in the second half saw the return of Nick’s ‘5 iron’ with a blistering shot heading for the top corner again but, Pete wanted to make sure it found the back of the net!! A final W’ton attack saw the ball work back from the Buxton base line to Raj who, with a bit of nimble foot work took the ball into the top of the D to seal W’ton’s 8-1 win. A great performance with probably some of the best hockey played for a number of seasons.
