Welcome to 2019

Posted by Nirmal Singh on 31 December 2018

Happy New Year to all players, coaches, parents and supporters.

I thought I’d take a few moments of your time to offer my thoughts on the season so far and how we go into the remainder.

Firstly, I’d like to congratulate both our 1st XIs who are unbeaten in their respective leagues, the men having won 10 games out of 10, the Ladies 6 out of 9.

I have had the pleasure of watching and umpiring both teams this year, the standard and style of hockey is the best I’ve seen in many years. That speaks volumes about the coaching and training that we have in place and my thanks to both Ali and Steve for their efforts. Going to training pays off folks(but more on that later).

As far as the rest of the club are concerned, Ladies 2nds also deserve a mention here having won 7 of their nine games this year. Our 3rds, reds and blues are all comfortably in mid table.

The other men’s sides have had a mixed season so far, but I’m sure they can turn things around with a few pieces of luck going our way.  We also managed to put out a men’s 4th XI on a couple of occasions with a mixture of senior players and badgers, both resulted in wins and we will be continuing to try to obtain more games for them in 2019.

I have also had the great pleasure of playing with and watching our Badgers. We have some very talented youngsters and I look forward to them coming through into Senior Hockey.

As we go forward into the new year, I feel that the club is in a relatively healthy situation but there is always more to be done so I’d just like to finish with a few requests.

One, that we make a greater effort to attend the social events that the club organises.  These events are not only a source of funds for the club, they are an integral part of being a club member.

Two, that we all continue our attempts to recruit new members, both playing and social.

Three, that we all  try to attend as many training sessions as possible. The evidence is clear from the results above that training works, both in terms of fitness and the quality of hockey that we play. Everyone can benefit no matter what level you are playing at.

So I look forward to seeing lots of you at Aldersley on Wednesday evening.  (Yes, training starts on the 2nd 😀)

Wishing you all a happy and successful 2019
